I love to use baking soda for natural cleaning. It is effective on dirt, grease, grime, and germs without the toxic smell of store bought cleaners. What could be better? Scented baking soda with essential oils, that's what!!
This is so simple to do and you get double benefits, the baking soda benefits and the essential oil benefits. Baking soda, aka sodium bicarbonate, is a wonderful deodorizer. Use as baking soda air freshener in different smelly areas of your home.
A common way is to use scented baking soda for carpets. Just sprinkle onto carpet, let sit, then vacuum up. It works great, read on for more tips.
Can you mix baking soda with essential oils?
Yes, you can use any essential oil in this recipe. I especially love to use my expired oils in this way. You would never want to put expired oils on your skin, but in cleaning products they are still useful (unless the scent has soured). It is better than throwing them away :)
I made this batch in the tutorial with peppermint essential oil, oh the smell is sooo good!! I do not like cleaning, but when I get an aromatherapy session out of it... it definitely makes it more enjoyable. Plus, I love knowing that my home is naturally clean without chemicals or toxic products.
Here are essential oils to try:
Save your old glass spice jars for this, they are just perfect for this recipe. I keep them and make different scented baking soda containers so I can pick what aroma I want to clean with.
You can decorate your jar too with twine or whatever notions you would like. Right now I have cassia, peppermint, and lemon scented baking soda containers for my cleaning projects.
Step 1: Place baking soda into small mixing bowl.
Step 2: Add in 15 drops of essential oil of choice.
Step 3: Use a metal whisk to break up any clumps and to blend in the essential oils.
Step 4: Transfer soda into spice container using a funnel. This recipe fits perfect in a standard spice container, you can make a bigger batch if you have a big container.I like to place an oil sticker on the top of the container lid so I know what oil was used.
Scented baking soda air freshener works great for a variety of things. Here are some ideas for how you can use your essential oils and baking soda blend.
That's a lot of uses right? I am sure you can come up with some of your own too. As you can see baking soda is a versatile ingredient, it can be used in your beauty routine too.
Essential oils are great because not only do they make you feel good physically but mentally as well. I love having them around since they have so many benefits like clearing the air of bad odors, improving moods by releasing calming scents in your home or office for instance!
