HoPE Dilution Guide

Now that you have been introduced to essential oils and the benefits that come along with it, you’ve probably started or are planning to start a stash. Managing your own collection of essential oils can be difficult and this is especially the case
when you have so many or when you don’t know what you’re doing.

It is our company’s mission to educate our consumers on the right way to use organic and natural products, safely and effectively, for beauty, home, health, and
wellness. That is why, in this blog, we will work with you to make sure that
you get all you need to know to make the most out of your oils. We will teach
you how to get the correct amount when diluting your essential oils.

HoPE Essential Oil Dilution Chart

We want you to always have a handy resource when it comes to diluting your oils and that is why we have created this guide to help you along your way. The chart below shows how to dilute essential oils to carrier oil. We suggest leaning toward the lighter concentration when using an essential oil for the first time to make sure that your body is attuned with it.
HoPE Dilution Guide
  • For babies, children, and sensitive skin: Start at 0.5% concentration, and gradually increase according to results. Do not go over 2% total essential oils.
  • For use in large areas of the body (i.e. body massage): Start at 1% concentration, and gradually increase according to results. Do not go over 3% total essential oils.
  • For targeted use, small areas (i.e. knees): Start at 2% concentration, and gradually increase according to results. Do not go over 5% total essential oils.

Volume of Carrier Oil

If you were to use a teaspoon or 5 ml of carrier oil, add one drop of essential oil to get a dilution rate of 0.5%. This is rather weak, but it is a fantastic way to try out an oil for the first time. Aromatherapeutic benefits of an essential oil can be achieved at 3% to 5% dilution rate. That is 3 to 5 drops of essential oil in every 5 ml of carrier oil.

Depending on how you would use your essential oils, there are times you’d need way more than a teaspoon. We have a guide for blending essential oils for massage and perfume. Click here to check it out!

Your Diffuser

Essential oil diffusers use water rather than carrier oil. The idea is to always start with the lowest concentration and gradually increasing according to results. Some oils may irritate you more than others so make sure to test out 3-5 drops of a single essential oil to 100ml of water to make 0.25% dilution rate. You can always add more to achieve the concentration you’d like depending on your body’s response. HoPE essential oils are pure and safe so you may add just couple of drops and still be able to get the benefits of the essential oils or go as high as 5% concentration, that’s 100 drops, and still be safe!

Application

For babies and those who have sensitive skin, you’ll really want to start off at 0.5%. You can then increase it over time, until you get to 2%. You can see our reference guide if you want to work out the appropriate measurement for the oil that you have. If you want to use the oils for massages then start at 1% and then increase it over time. Don’t go over 3% here. For targeted areas, try and start out at 2% and then gradually increase it, but don’t go over 5%. Targeted areas can include your knees, elbows or anywhere on the body that is not a full application.

Of course, this is only a guide and depending on your body, you may feel as though you want to have oil that is more or less diluted. It’s all down to your own personal preference, but if you ever have any questions or if you want to find out how we can help you then please do get in touch with us
today. We would love to hear from you today!
