Turpentine is the product obtained from the distillation of the resin of Pinus pinaster, maritime pine. Maritime pine is a conifer with persistent dark green needles, its height can reach 30 m. It belongs to the Pinaceae family. These pines appreciate non-calcareous soils exposed to the sun and can live more than 500 years. The pine has ovoid cones, male and female reproductive systems, present on the same individual, hence the name “monoecious species”.
Turpentine is sometimes called "galipot", "Bordeaux peas" or "turpentine". Maritime pine is common on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. It is found in the Landes de Gascogne where the surface area reaches one million hectares, it is also present and cultivated in Italy, Morocco and Portugal.
