From the myrtaceae family, manuka is a slow growing shrub, reaching a maximum of 3 meters. It likes light, rich and drained soils, but also gravelly soils or sandy moors. Of a bushy appearance, its branches erect towards the sky have many small aromatic and persistent leaves, slightly spicy. Its pink flowers are composed of 5 rounded petals.
Manuka was discovered by naturalist Johann Georg Adam Forster and botanist Johann R. Forster on the occasion of Captain Cook's second voyage (1772 - 1775). It was Cook who immediately called it "New Zealand tea tree", because the aborigines used its leaves in infusion, for digestive antiseptic purposes.
