It grows naturally in the south of Madagascar and its height can reach 28m. It has alternate leaves of about 15cm, its bark of a pale gray color, tending to yellow, is rough on the surface. A tree endemic to Madagascar, it grows on all types of soil. It can be propagated by cuttings from the stems or by seeds.
Katafray wood is renowned for its strength and hardness. Imperishable, it was traditionally used in the making of royal sakalava tombs. Today, its wood is sought after for shipbuilding, heavy construction, interior woodwork and joinery. Cedrelopsis grevei holds an important place in traditional Malagasy medicine, where its fresh leaves and the bark of the roots are used to treat many ailments.
